Emmanuel Frémiet
Joan of Arc

1889
Gilded bronze
Place des Pyramides, Paris

In 1889 this statue replaced one that Frémiet had created in 1874. Some sources on the internet claim that the 1874 version had been commissioned by the National Assembly as a way of inspiring patriotism in the wake of France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian war. In 2012 the statue provided the backdrop for one of Marine Le Pen's campaign rallies.
